Premium quality cooked pu-erh is mixed with the leaves of Semnostachya menglaensis H. P. Tsui and pressed into convenient tuochas in this aromatic tea. In southwest China sometimes (true) tea is mixed with the leaves of this plant, not only to flavor the beverage, but as a cost lowering measure in rural inns, rather than fancy establishments. (This plant is not related to rice plants.) These tuochas brew a flavorful mahogany-colored liquor that is fragrant with characteristic sticky rice bouquet, and with a slightly astringent aftertaste that lingers on the palate, imparting a very satisfying tea experience. It benefits from a long steep with fully boiling water.
