Indoor fountains normally
require much less maintenance than outdoor fountains. Where a fountain is
kept will have a lot to do with how often it should be cleaned. One of the
best ways to keep a fountain clean is to run it. Water will evaporate by
running the fountain and most probably chlorinated tap water will be added to
replenish it. If hard water is used it should be changed more often because
over a period of time the minerals in the water become very concentrated.
When the fountain is cleaned,
all debris should be rinsed from the reservoir and the pump disassembled and
rinsed out. It does not take much grit or scale to stall the pump motor.
If the pump is plugged in and does not run, it probably needs to be rinsed
out and will work just fine. Hard water scale deposits can be removed from
the pump and most objects in the fountain by soaking them in Lime-a-Way or
other similar cleaner.
