On January 8, 1953, Yasasuke Katsuno, the Japanese Counsel General, presented a 9,000 pound Lantern of Peace on behalf of the children of Japan. The Lantern of Peace was purchased with small contributions from the children of Japan and was given as a symbol of friendship toward future generations in the United States. San Francisco was chosen to receive the lantern because the Japanese Peace Treaty was signed here in 1951. |
