labaster stones are ground
into powder form and molded into a block before artisans in China handcarve them into beautiful and
exquisite works of art like netsuke, okimono, jewelry, statues and other objects. No two carvings are
exactly alike because each is individually handcarved and often bears the artist's mark. Due to the
abundance of this material, these intricately carved works of art are more affordable than those carved
in ivory. Alabaster carvings help conservation efforts by providing an abundant substitute for ivory
from endangered elephants for traditional Oriental carvers.
