Jade Gourd Teapot with High Handle

Jade Gourd Teapot with High Handle
This jade teapot with high handle is inspired by the gourd. It is the symbol of mystery and necromancy and the emblem of Li T'ieh-kuai, one of the Eight Immortals of Taoism, who holds it in his hand while spirals of smoke ascend from it, denoting his power of setting his spirit free from his body. The gourd is in frequent use as a charm to dissipate or ward off pernicious influences. The high handle of this teapot is carved to represent a vine with leaf, tendrils and small developing gourd-fruit while the finial is shaped to resemble a gourd with leaf attached to its stem.
