This jade teapot with high handle is inspired by the gourd. It is the symbol of mystery and
necromancy and the emblem of Li T'ieh-kuai, one of the Eight Immortals
of Taoism, who holds it in his hand while spirals of smoke ascend from it, denoting his
power of setting his spirit free from his body. The gourd is in frequent use as a charm to
dissipate or ward off pernicious influences. The high handle of this teapot is carved
to represent a vine with leaf, tendrils and small developing gourd-fruit while the finial is
shaped to resemble a gourd with leaf attached to its stem. |
