The lotus is a symbol of sacred beauty, purity and perfection because it grows out of mud
but is not defiled; it is also the flower of summer in Chinese mythology. This teapot, finely
crafted of Japanese clay, embodies all of the symbolism that the lotus has inspired. The body
is in the shape of a wide-open lotus blossom on its side, with seven moveable lotus pod seeds exposed,
each representing the blessing of an obedient child. The handle is shaped like the stem of the
flower, and the spout a curled lotus leaf. The three feet of the teapot are molded as water
chestnut, lotus root, and ling-chiao, emblem of fruitfulness. Atop the leaf lid
with stem finial perches a small dove.
