Livistonia cheninsis is the commonest form of Chinese palm, the leaves of which are made
into fans. The Chinese think very highly of a retired life, free from the turmoil of this world,
and this state of existence is generally indicated by a figure sitting under a palm tree, a cottage
perched on the top of a high cliff, in the recesses of a mountain or hidden from view by an
overhanging rock. A fan made out of a palm leaf is generally carried by retired scholars and by
alchemists. The body of this dark zisha globular teapot is truncated at the back from
which emerges a semicircular handle. The side of the teapot is decorated with a spray of palm
leaves in light sand-colored zisha.
