Tenugui

Here is a cotton towel originally used for headwear, belts, and decorative wrapping has been around since the Heian period (794AD - 1185), and gained popularity as fabric making improved and reduced costs.

As bathing became more popular so did tenugui and during the summer they were worn as headgear or sweatbands.
