Ninga were a specially trained group of spies and mercenaries in feudal Japan.  Unlike samurai who descended from nobility, most ninja were villagers and farmers who learned to fight for their own self-preservation.  While samurai were required to adhere to a strict code of conduct (bushido), ninja were skilled in covert espionage, sabotage, and infiltration and their goal was to reduce their enemy's military power by any means necessary.  Thus, ninja were often employed by feudal lords to engage in activities that samurai were forbidden to participate in.
