The art of kabazaiku (cherry-bark work) was first introduced around the late 1700s. During this time, lower-ranking samurai made cherry bark items and sold them as a means to earn extra money. As the craft became more popular, items made from cherry bark were often given as gifts and prized for their craftsmanship. Presently, throughout the world, this craft form is only practiced in a small region of Japan. In order to create our mountain cherry bark canisters, highly skilled craftsmen apply each piece of bark smoothly onto the surface of the canisters. Depending upon how long the cherry bark has aged, its colors may range from medium brown to dark reddish-brown. Extremely strong and impermeable to air, mountain cherry bark develops a patina which deepens with use, thus adding to each canister's uniqueness and natural beauty.
